The devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy has been difficult to process -- so massive, overwhelming, destructive.
Pittsburghers have joined with those across the country to pray, donate and sympathize with all of those affected by the 1,000-mile-wide storm that slammed into the East Coast 10 days ago. But they have a particular generations-long connection with the New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland shorelines where many local residents vacation annually, some since they were children.
How did favorite seaside vacation spots fare in the face of the storm? What has been lost? What can be reclaimed?
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Michael A. Fuoco and photographer Rebecca Droke today are embarking on a shore trip to find out. They'll begin their reporting in Long Beach Island in New Jersey and will work their way south into Delaware, ending in Ocean City, Md.
They will check out the effect the storm has had on the people who reside there and the shore's iconic beaches, boardwalks, amusement parks, stores, hotels, arcades, rental homes.
They will detail their travels in a daily blog. A full story and photographs, with multimedia on the website, will appear in an upcoming Sunday Post-Gazette.
