Guests at fundraisers often don't get to meet the people they help. At Ward Home's second annual benefit on Saturday, Ivory Bennett, 22, of Oakland had 160 guests laughing and crying as she described her life and what she had gained from the 108-year-old program that teaches life skills to at-risk young adults. In keeping with the gala theme "Picture This!" the walls of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Shadyside were filled with photographs taken by current clients representing their goals and aspirations. Ellen Fleurov, executive director of Silver Eye Center for Photography, had shown them some tricks of the trade, then juried a show of professional work. Christopher Ruane won the blue ribbon for his digital painting, "Wild Fire," Kelly Bogel took second place, and Polly Mills Whitehorn third. All photos were for sale, and a silent auction was held.
Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts executive director Charlie Humphrey chaired the host committee that included Ward Home executive director Daryl Lucke, Melody Carter-Frye, Shawn Gatto, Sherri Grasak, Kory Greene, Kweilynn Greene, Ward family descendant Elizabeth Hindman, Ruby Kang, Karen Lamoureux, Amy Phelps, Pert Pivirotto, the Rev. Donald Scandrol, Laurie Streiner, Corie Turner and Peggy Wolstoncroft. Also browsing the photos and silent auction items were Dick DiBella and Jim and Lisa Gatto. Music as pretty as the pictures came from the Roger Barbour Trio (with drummer Vince Taglieri and keyboardist Tim Jenkins), and food and beverages were provided by A'Pizza Badamos, Bethel Bakery, Big Burrito, Coffee Tree Roasters, Duquesne Pilsener, Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale, Habitat Restaurant, Little Tokyo, Mediterra Bakehouse, Parkhurst Dining Services, Sarris Candies and The Capital Grille.
