The theme was Party Like a Rock Star, so who could resist? Not the 700 guests who arrived at the Carnegie Science Center Saturday night prepared to do just that. Of course some of them had no idea what a rock star is, given that the UPMC Children's Ball attracts a very young crowd.
That didn't stop them from dancing up a storm with an assortment of local mascots such as Steely McBeam and the Pitt Panther.
Miss Pennsylvania Jordyn Colao was a big hit with all the little girls who loved her glittering crown and wanted to look like a fairy princess, too. There was karaoke in the DJ booth, face painting and caricatures, guitar playing, hula hoop dancing, constellations presented as circus performers and fruit flambe in the kitchen. Throw in a buffet dinner of kiddie favorites and you can see why the ball continues to thrive as a "dress up" event for children.
Pam Douglas and her crew organized the evening, which raised nearly $115,000 for the UPMC Health for Life Summer Camp at Braddock. Guests were welcomed by former lead camp counselor Latashia Woods, UPMC McKeesport president Cynthia Dorundo and VP Merle Taylor and Clyde Jones, president of the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation for the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, who came with his niece Colby Jones and her daughter, 6-year old Serayah Leech.
