Rich Fitzgerald invited 1,500 of his closest friends to celebrate his inauguration as chief executive of Allegheny County on Tuesday, choosing as his venue the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in Duquesne. Politically it was an astute choice, of the people and for the people and big enough to hold a crowd for his Inauguration Celebration. The price of admission? Besides being an invited supporter, friend or family member of the Fitzgerald clan, guests were asked to bring nonperishable items to donate to the food bank.

Hosted by the Rich Fitzgerald Inaugural Committee, the bash was catered by Bob Sendall and his All in Good Taste in, well, good taste. Nothing too over-the-top, just great Pittsburgh comfort food including pierogies and homemade kielbasa. The vast space was dramatically lit and anchored by several large bars, where pomegranate martinis vied with beer as the popular drink of the evening. Mr. Fitzgerald and his wife, Cathy, along with their eight lovely children, welcomed guests as they entered. Lending a festive musical note was the John Parker Band, which only stopped long enough to allow Mrs. Fitzgerald to introduce her husband to the appreciative crowd.

Among the guests were U.S. Reps. Mark Critz and Mike Doyle, County Council president Charles Martoni and members Nick Futules, Jan Rea and Bob Macey, city council's Bill Peduto, Patrick Dowd and Bruce Kraus, state House Minority Leader Frank Dermody, state Sens. Wayne Fontana and Jay Costa, state Reps. Bill Kortz and Paul Costa, Philip Ameris, president of the Laborers' District Council of Western PA, Michael Dunleavy, business manager of IBEW Local No. 5, former county council members C.L. Jabbour and Brenda Frazier, Pittsburgh Technology Council's Audrey Russo, Getting to the Point's Ellen Roth, Carnegie Library's new director Mary Frances Cooper, Cliff Levine, Jeanne Clark, Phil Pappas, Steve and Gail Moisites, Marc Cherna, food bank director Jermaine Husser, Mr. Fitzgerald's chief of staff Jennifer Liptak and former County Executive Dan Onorato.
