It takes the dedication of committee members, parents and friends to transform 11 young ladies from "Precious to Cultured Pearls." The Presentation Ball of the same name at Churchill Valley Country Club Friday night benefited the Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh. Delphina Briscoe, president of ICE, was delighted with debutantes and the effort they demonstrated. "The girls must go through an interview process evaluating community service, among other things, and if they are chosen they then attend workshops twice a month for a year," explained event co-chair Glenda Mayo.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.'s Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter organizes the biennial ball. "It is our hope the young ladies apply this experience to their work and school lives," said sorority chapter president Toni Kendrick. In agreement was newly elected president Christina Wilds, who was ball co-chair with Ms. Mayo. As the high school juniors and seniors were presented to nearly 200 guests, Wayne Walters, principal of the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, read their list of accomplishments and goals. It wasn't just the debutantes who made an effort for the event -- some of the escorts on high school basketball teams were missing playing time for the ball. They also had to learn the waltz and promenade along with the girls. It all came to a fairy-tale conclusion as the music started and the couples elegantly glided around the dance floor.
