No live pit bulls attended Hello Bully's fifth annual Lovers Not Fighters Gala on Saturday, but two dogs stood out at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. Sam, a sweet dog whose face was heavily scarred when he was a fighter, showed up often in a video and was even portrayed in a one-of-a-kind stuffed animal.

The other dog, Sgt. Stubby, was a World War I veteran and the subject of Post-Gazette publisher John Robinson Block's speech as he received Hello Bully's first Hero Award for the Toledo Blade's efforts against breed-specific legislation in Ohio.

Others vouching for pit bulls' gentle nature included "Survivor" winner Jenna Morasca, comedian Jim Krenn and Hello Bully founder Daisy Balawejder.
