Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo was a very good waiter Tuesday night -- he was tipped $2,200 by his table during the Pittsburgh Penguins' annual Skates & Plates benefit at Consol Energy Center.
The popular event drew 300 guests who perused the auction items during cocktails before sitting down to dinner. Showing as much skill with a wine bottle as a hockey stick, the players served a beet salad, herb-roasted filet and lobster risotto with nary a dropped plate.
By evening's end, $305,000 had been grossed for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. On hand was Pens president David Morehouse, GM Ray Shero, coach Dan Bylsma and the Lemieux Foundation's Tom Grealish and Nancy Angus.
