Coro Pittsburgh celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s value-based leadership by honoring the individuals and organizations in the region that are building a more inclusive democracy.
On Friday the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership & Diversity Awards honored three recipients: Jeremy Resnick, a founder and executive director of Propel Schools; Andrew Butcher, a co-founder and CEO of Growth Through Energy + Community Health; and Hip Hop on L.O.C.K (represented by founder and executive director Emmai Alaquiva). More than 300 guests turned out for a reception and buffet dinner catered by Parkhurst before the program began in the August Wilson Center for African American Culture.
Gregory Crowley, president and CEO of the Coro Center for Civic Leadership, welcomed the crowd along with Sala Udin, Coro president emeritus and August Wilson interim director. Kare Anderson, Forbes columnist and Emmy Award-winning former Wall Street Journal and NBC journalist, delivered the keynote address.
Coro seeks to cultivate leadership qualities in people "of every sector, age, gender, race, neighborhood and status," and that more or less described the crowd. Mingling before the remarks were Coro board chair Richard Ekstrom with Sandy, city Councilman Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Kevin McMahon. YWCA CEO Rig Riggins, Jackie Dixon, Dan and Lauren Resnick, Chris Bryan, Maggie McDonald, Ken Spruill, Paul and Carol Stockman and many more.
