Who does cancer affect? When asked if they or a family member had been touched by the disease almost all of the 970 guests at the Hillman Cancer Center Gala Friday stood. But greater proof could be found in the generosity of the crowd. An impressive $5.5 million was raised during Faces of Hope: A Future Without Cancer, the benefit for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and UPMC Cancer Centers. The gala at Consol Energy Center featured a performance by Chris Mann, a finalist on "The Voice," as well as remarks from honorary chair and PNC Pittsburgh president Sy Holzer, who is chair of the UPCI Council. Henry and Elsie Hillman also served as honorary chairs, and Becky and John Surma and Christina and Carlos Cardoso chaired the gala. UPCI and UPMC Cancer Center director Dr. Nancy Davidson and UPMC Cancer Center chair Dr. Stanley Marks also spoke, as did cancer survivor Amy Dolan-Malaney. Dr. Mark Socinski was honored as the 2012 PNC/UPCI Director's Distinguished Scholar. The gala made a welcome switch to a weekend night this year, enticing guests to linger at the coffee bar after a dinner of rack of lamb and chicken with thyme. Pam Douglas brought it all together with great style -- no mean feat in a hockey arena!
