The Studio on Fifth, a new event space that is actually an underutilized television studio at WQED, offered a fresh take on the 12th annual H'Art & Soul of Haiti. Friday's benefit for the Friends of Hopital Albert Schweitzer Haiti attracted more than 438 guests, including many who had visited the hospital in Haiti to see firsthand the work being done by the organization founded by Dr. Larimer Mellon.
Chief among them were the evening's honorees, plastic surgeon Dr. Bill Swartz and his wife, Cindy. Dr. Swartz has brought teams of doctors to Haiti twice a year to perform much needed surgeries in addition to the financial contributions he and his wife have made.
A sale of Haitian art, always a centerpiece of the evening, continued during a buffet of Haitian specialities catered by La Creme.
Assorted musical entertainment paved the way for the Tom Tom Club led by Pittsburgh native Chris Frantz and his wife, Tina Weymouth, and a second wave of guests.
In the crowd were Friends president Lucy Rawson with husband Ian, managing director of the hospital, former honoree Louise Stephaich with son Peter, Barbara and Michael Granito, Bill and Ann Scherlis, the Rev. Harold and Claudette Lewis, Alice Snyder, Caroline Stewart, Lynn and Chip Desmone, Franny and Rachel Wymard, Esther Barazzone, Barry Paris, BJ Leber, Dusty Kirk and Bill Caroselli, Pam and Erik Wagner, Betsy Magley, Susan and Tom Schmidt and Aaron Walton.
