Former Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey celebrated his 80th birthday with the help of his wife, Elin, some friends and the River City Brass.
The celebration at the Fairmont Pittsburgh Saturday doubled as a benefit for the River City Brass, which is a favorite of Mr. Roddey. The evening was hosted by Ken McCrory (with Pam), Linda Dickerson and Grant Oliphant. Hosts Hoddy Hanna and David Malone were unable to attend, but more than 200 others did. The party began with cocktails and catching up before the doors opened to a ballroom filled with balloons and party hats. Mr. McCrory welcomed everyone to the birthday benefit and toasted the man of the hour.
After dinner River City Brass music director James Gourlay had the band play "He's a Jolly Good Fellow," followed by "Happy Birthday." The surprise of the evening was when Mr. Roddey led the band in a rousing rendition of the Marine Corps Hymn. "I have actually been to the Halls of Montezuma and the shores of Tripoli," said the former Marine captain. He also said it was his actual birthday, which made the event all that much better.
Among those applauding were board chair Paul Furiga, Dr. Cyril and Sigrid Wecht, Dr. Loren and Ellen Roth, Jay and Ranny Ferguson, Peter and Connie Sukernek, Ruth Garfunkel, Bill and Mikell Schenck and David Hillman.
