Thanks to Duane Rieder, a meticulously restored fire station in Lawrenceville is now home to the largest collection of Roberto Clemente photographs, literature, art work, artifacts and memorabilia in the world. Mr. Rieder is owner and curator of The Clemente Museum, which is housed on two floors in Engine House 25 on Butler Street. In the basement is an extensive wine cellar filled with casks of Engine House 25 Wine, another Rieder project. It was there that the VIP portion of Thursday's third annual benefit for the museum got under way before guests turned out for the main event. A silent auction and wonderful food prepared by local chefs kept everyone busy between trips to see Clemente's World Series rings and other items collected with the help of Clemente's family.
Pirates alumni, including Manny Sanguillen, Grant Jackson and Bob Friend, joined Pittsburgh Pirates president Frank Coonelly, Pittsburgh Penguin Pascal Dupuis, actors David Conrad and Patrick Jordan, Katie Leyland (husband Jim is a bit busy these days in Detroit), David Busch and Rob Guidarelli of Tier 1, UPMC CIO Dan Drawbaugh, Bob Meeder, David Kahley and R.K. Mellon Foundation president Scott Izzo. The Clemente Museum has received national acclaim and has been called one of the best tourist destinations in Pittsburgh. Go see for yourself!
