To get an idea of the size of the new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, it helps to see an aerial photo. But the impressive exterior only hints at the wonders inside. The hospital officially opens May 2, but Thursday the donors whose generosity made the project possible were honored at "This One Moment in Time," a private preview.

Some 200 guests gathered first for a presentation in the Rangos Research Center. They were greeted by Children's CEO Roger Oxendale, president Chris Gessner, hospital chair Mary Jo Dively and foundation chair Catharine Ryan. A moving video was followed by tours, which culminated with cocktails in the atrium. A giant movie screen, designed to be visible from every floor of the glass tower, was dramatically revealed, and taped remarks from longtime supporter Jamie Lee Curtis were played. Then it was on to a gourmet dinner in the colorfully lit lobby, with tables draped with linens from Mosaic and covered with an array of spring flowers from Design Space.

Among those marveling at what they had wrought were Sy Holzer, Hoddy and Mary Anne Hanna, Judge Jill Rangos with son Nick, Joe Walton, Matt and Leslie Braksick, Jim and Carolyn Bouchard, David and Linda McCamish, Richard Mellon, Becky Snyder, Denise Nairn, Jim Broadhurst, Scott Izzo, Douglas and Laura Dick and Tim Powers of Astorino.
