A groovy crowd turned out Thursday for the preview opening of "1968: The Year That Rocked America," the new exhibit at the Senator John Heinz History Center.

The traveling exhibition, here until May 12, is a total time warp, starting with Janis Joplin's tiny bell bottoms and big feather boa. So was the reception chaired by Bev Elliott, Kathy Testoni and Peggy Snavely.

Guests re-discovered Mrs. Paul's fish sticks, chicken a la king and the pleasures of cheese fondue, not to mention a candy table laden with classic treats like Charleston Chews. Inside the exhibit there were many shades of avocado, just the start of a stroll down memory lane for some, ghosts from another era for others. A Mister Rogers exhibit was startlingly lifelike, while clips from old TV shows, movie stills, rock 'n' roll, Vietnam war footage and memorabilia including a helicopter and other artifacts kept the crowd fascinated.

Remembering when (mostly they weren't born!) were history center CEO Andy Masich with Debbie, curator Emily Ruby, exhibit designer Michael Dubois, Clyde Jones representing presenting sponsor UPMC Health Plan, Tom and Becky McGough, Sue Fitzsimmons with mother Terri Snavely, Lois Wholey, Debbie and Mike Barbarita, Mardi and Bill Isler (who runs Fred Rogers' Family Communications) and Dennis Yablonsky with Veronica.
