The August Wilson Center for African American Culture, in partnership with the Holocaust Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, will host a gala Monday to open an exhibition called "The Nazi Olympics: Berlin 1936."

The exhibition focuses on the successes of black and Jewish athletes at the 1936 Olympics as well as the anti-Semitism that dominated Germany in that era and the pervasive racism that black Americans faced in the U.S.

On loan from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., the exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday and runs through February. The show will serve as the basis for cultural and education programs.

Beginning in December, the Great Collaborations Series will examine how African-Americans and Jews formed productive alliances during the 20th century. A series of four town hall forums will be held to discuss how Jews and African-Americans partnered successfully in the past and what the two groups can accomplish together in the future. Dates and panelists for the town halls will be announced later.

Three cultural performances will be held at the Wilson Center, 980 Liberty Ave., Downtown. The Sean Jones Quintet, featuring Israeli saxophonist and composer Eli Degibri, will perform "Gershwinter Nights" at 8 p.m. Dec. 29 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 30. The program features the music of George and Ira Gershwin, including the opera "Porgy and Bess."

Next spring, from March 22 through April 1, the August Wilson Theater Company will perform a new play, "The Sisters Grey," by Gab Cody and Lori Roper.

On April 12 and 13, Greer Reed and the August Wilson Dance Ensemble will premiere a two-part dance program, "Paving the Road to Survival." Choreographers for the performance are Christopher Huggins and Kevin Iega Jeff.

Tickets for Monday's 7 p.m. gala are $25 per person and can be obtained by calling Alicia Bekeny at 412-421-1500, ext. 106, or emailing abekeny@jfedpgh.org.
