Starting Sunday, the Senator John Heinz History Center is offering three genealogy workshops designed to show people how to research their family history. As space is limited, participants are asked to register by calling 412-454-6364 or by sending an email to library@heinzhistorycenter.org.

The first workshop, offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m Sunday, focuses on researching Jewish family roots. Experts from the history center's Rauh Jewish Archives will demonstrate how to use naturalization records and the Pittsburgh Jewish Newspaper website. Admission is free and kosher refreshments will be served at 1:45 p.m.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 African-American genealogists will present their research on the manumission papers included in the history center's new exhibition "From Slavery to Freedom." Curated by Samuel Black, the exhibition showcases the history of the anti-slavery movement, the Underground Railroad and the influential role 19th-century activism played in the growth of the modern civil rights movement. Mr. Black will speak along with representatives of the Afro-American Genealogical Society of Pittsburgh. Besides offering tips on how to research your family history, experts will share the methods they use to conduct research on ancestors who were enslaved and emancipated. Admission is free.

A lunch and learn session will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 with Cathy Cerrone Fratto, who will discuss the history of Italian Americans in Western Pennsylvania. Ms. Fratto served as the Heinz History Center's first Italian-American curator. Participants will learn how to conduct a family oral history and how to preserve their Italian heritage and traditions. This session is free with Heinz History Center admission. Heinz History Center members are admitted free. Admission to the history center is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors 62 and older, $6 for students and children, ages 6 to 17. The museum is free for children 5 and under.
