Shadyside ... The Art Festival
The late-summer tradition continues in one of Pittsburgh's fairer communities with the 15th annual Shadyside ... The Art Festival on Walnut Street, once again presented by the Florida-based Howard Alan Events.
The busy stretch of Walnut between South Aiken and South Negley avenues will become a thoroughfare for visiting artists. On display and for sale will be paintings, life-size sculptures, photography, mixed media, functional art and jewelry, ranging from $25 to $30,000.
In all, there will be 150 artists from 30 different states, including painters Alexis Covato, Vince Ornato and Yelena Lamm, photographers Mark Scott and Paul Lindenfelser, and jewelers Lisa Parker, Kim Sutherland and Diane Wright.
The free festival runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Details: www.artfestival.com.
Wine at Seven Springs
Thirty wineries from all over Pennsylvania will offer a taste at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort's 20th annual Wine & Food Festival on Saturday and Sunday.
Among those attending will be the Bee Kind Winery, Flickerwood Wine Cellars, Glades Pike Winery, Long Trout Winery, Presque Isle Wine Cellars, Starr Hill and Raspberry Acres. Guests can sample and purchase the wines.
The festival also features wine seminars, gourmet food from Helen's Restaurant, live entertainment and a variety of arts and crafts. Seminar topics include "Cooking With Wine" and "Pairing Wine and Cheese" with cheeses provided by Giant Eagle.
Performing will be Cadillac Jazz, Mark Ferrari Trio, Shades of June, Backstreets Unplugged, Sputzy and the Soul Providers, Jason Kendall Band, and J.D. Eicher and the Goodnights.
The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $36 Saturday and $26 Sunday. Admission includes a wine glass, attendance to the wine and food seminars, musical entertainment, crafts exhibits and a program guide. Red, Ripe and Roasted
The front lawn of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be filled on Sunday with the eighth annual Red, Ripe and Roasted tomato and garlic festival.
It will feature cooking demonstrations and tastings, a garlic roast, a tomato contest (bring your ugliest, smallest or largest), a farmers market and activities for kids, all benefiting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Dishes will be prepared by Cafe Phipps, a 3-star Green Restaurant Certified eatery. The Post-Gazette's Doug Oster will be on hand to sell and sign copies of his book "Tomatoes Garlic Basil." There also will be a guest presentation from Trina Clickner, author of "A Miscellany of Garlic."
