Greendance winery invites a few friends for fifth birthday

Greendance, the winery at Sand Hill near Mt. Pleasant in Westmoreland County, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with four other wineries on the Southwest Passage Wine Trail.
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, visitors can sample and purchase Greendance's wines as well as those from Christian Klay, Greenhouse, Thistlewaite and Walnut Hill.
At 2 p.m. both days, Greendance assistant winemaker John Tremba will lead an hour-long winemaking workshop ($10 per person for up to 15 per class). And amateurs can bring their homemade wines to Greendance (by Oct. 1 so they can be judged) to compete in an amateur winemakers contest. Winners in several categories will be announced at 1 p.m. that Saturday and be on display both days.
Other fun includes a "Great Grape Stomp" at 3:30 p.m. that Saturday, in which barefooted participants can compete for prizes for smashing the most juice from a set amount of grapes.
At 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Carol Pascuzzi, the "Dear Heart" lady from Pennsylvania Macaroni Co. in the Strip District, will present wine and cheese pairings ($15 per person).
Other food will be for sale, including, on Sunday, three savory crepes by Chef Sergio Magnani. And there will be live music throughout the festival.
There are now eight wineries (Ripepi is a new member but can't make it to this event) and lots of other attractions, on the Southwest Passage Wine Trail, which makes a big S across this corner of the state, from Blairsville to Jefferson. Greendance wants to support that group.
"We're so busy with ourselves that we can't visit other wineries," says Greendance tasting manager Diane Dilworth. "It's nice that we'll be all together."
Greendance has put together a Google map that shows other local attractions for travelers who want to make a day or an overnight trip out of it.
