Regular readers may have seen last week's column on chocolate beers. At least two chocolate brews are expected to be brought to Mt. Lebanon's Winterfest by home brewers participating in the event later this month.
You can buy beers to drink but it'll be even more fun to sample an array of home brews at the second Winterfest, set for noon to 3 p.m. on Feb. 23 at Clearview Commons on the main drag.
For $10, you can taste the stuff made by invited home brewers. Graphic designer and co-organizer Daniel Pipetone (he'll be pouring some of of his made-in-Mt. Lebo Straw Bale brews) says the lineup is going to be a good one, including some stars and rising stars, such as Belle Vernon's Jeff Bloom, who makes a variety of Bloom Brews. (Mr. Bloom also is to present a tasting at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 at Bocktown Beer and Grill near Monaca.)
Mr. Pipetone says fellow Lebo brewer Jeff Bower's planned pourings include a little of his Mocha Java Porter, brewed with chocolate and coffee, and Reclamation Brewing will be bringing some of its Spurgeon's Chocolate Milk Stout, brewed with chocolate as well as oatmeal.
Bringing a range of brews will be Keith Kost, whose coconut stout won a gold medal in the fruit beer category in last year's American Homebrewers Association National Homebrew Competition.
The homebrew tasting is extra; the fest itself costs $10 (or $15 at the door), which allows you to taste chili from more than a dozen local restaurants; the Lebo police and fire departments will compete for best-chili bragging rights, too.
