Former Ursuline Academy added to historic places register

The former Ursuline Academy, built as a 21-room mansion for a wealthy dry goods merchant, will go on the National Register of Historic Places today during a ceremony in Bloomfield.
Local preservationists and civic leaders will gather between 2 and 5 p.m. to see the Second Empire-style house at 201 S. Winebiddle St. During the summer of 2008, students in the University of Pittsburgh's Documentation and Conservation Studio course documented the building by taking photographs and researching the history of its ownership.
Jeff Slack, a historic preservation specialist at Pfaffmann + Associates, will speak at 2 p.m about the building's significance and how it came to be listed on the National Register. The marker will be unveiled about 3 p.m. In 2010, one of Mr. Slack's classes wrote the initial draft of the National Register nomination.
