Western Pennsylvania is filled with picturesque landscapes, and some pop up in the most unlikely locations.
Such is the case with 2114 Orchard St. in Munhall. The five-bedroom, three-bath Tudor-style house sits on a hill on a quiet, dead-end street and has views of a cemetery and ballfield. It is on the market for $119,900 with Shirley Olenak of Jim Pignott Real Estate (412-464-0602 or www.jimpigott.com).
The home is handicapped-accessible and comes with an outdoor elevator lift attached to the three-car garage on a lower level. Users can park and ride the lift up to the rear of the house. Also, a side porch was enclosed to create a three-seasons room and make room for a large handicapped bathroom that features a wheel-in shower, handicapped grab bars and a sink with wheelchair access. The view from the three-seasons room is quite breathtaking, with long vistas of the hills and valleys below.
"I've owned the home for six years, I understand that the previous owner had the elevator installed at a cost of almost $25,000," said owner Debra Cicero.
If you choose to enter from the front of the house, you are greeted by a portico and full-view front door leading to a 13- by 8-foot entry with dark parquet floors. The 18- by 13-foot living room features the original stone fireplace and wood mantel. "The insert is gas. We used it all the time," Ms. Cicero said.
The room is also bright thanks to a large picture window on the front wall. The room has a pair of original French doors at the far end that access the three-seasons room.
The entry also leads to the kitchen, which measures 14 by 11 feet and features light oak cabinets and white appliances including a dishwasher, side-by-side refrigerator, glass top stove and over-the-counter microwave/range unit. The floors are white ceramic tile and the counters are a neutral solid surface.
The dining room measures 14 by 13 feet and features a large decorative fireplace with an original copper insert.
In addition to the first floor laundry room, there are laundry hookups in the basement along with the second of three full bathrooms.
The rest of the basement is not finished and has a concrete floor.
On the second floor, three bedrooms range in size from 13 by 9 feet to 13 by 12 feet. Mrs. Cicero said that there were fireplaces in the rooms at one time but that the walls were moved to create larger closets. She is not sure if the mantelpieces are still intact. All of the rooms are carpeted in a neutral plush carpeting. The third full bathroom is on that floor and features a jetted tub. Two more bedrooms are on the third floor, measuring 13 by 12 feet and 13 by 9 feet.
The house has hot water heat and a supplemental central air conditioning system that needs a new compressor to be operable. Most of the replacement windows are Andersen and the exterior is brick with stucco composite on the third level. Mrs. Cicero indicated that the gutters are being repaired and some minor exterior painting is on hold due to the weather.
In the back, the three-car garage has a concrete roof that doubles as a large patio complete with a fire pit. Surrounded by a metal safety fence, it is a favorite spot in the summertime enjoy the views.
The house has a much of its original interior woodwork, 9-foot ceilings and arched doorways between the rooms. The wide doorways make the first floor very accessible.
The property has a 2013 county assessed value of $69,700 (www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/Search.aspx).
No properties have sold on Orchard Street over the last three years.
The property abuts Knight Field, also known as West Field, and is across East 22nd Avenue from Homestead Cemetery.
From nearby West Street, it's a five -minute drive to the Carnegie Library of Homestead, The Waterfront shopping complex and the Homestead Grays Bridge.
