One afternoon, Jackie Swan noticed people standing out front of her mother's house, pointing and taking pictures. After a time they knocked on the door and introduced themselves as the grandchildren of the man who built the house in 1940. They remembered weekends at their grandparents' home, listening to baseball games on the radio or playing in the large backyard.

It's the perfect use for 1118 Beaver Road, Glen Osborne, a two-story brick Colonial on the market for $970,000 (MLS No. 928829) through Judith Vescio of Prudential Preferred Realty (412-741-6312 or www.prudentialpreferred.com). An open house is set from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 6 for the six-bedroom, 41/2-bath home.

"When my mom was a child, she loved this house. She told herself that one day she would live in a house like it and she did," Ms. Swan said.

Visitors entering from the covered front porch pass through French doors flanked on either side by large octagonal windows. The 24- by 10-foot foyer has a black-and-white checkerboard tile floor and a dramatic winding staircase. In the adjacent 28- by 15-foot living room, the first thing that grabs your attention is the ornate Italian marble gas fireplace.

The 16- by 11-foot den has an arched doorway and tongue-and-groove, knotty-pine paneling on three walls and the ceiling.

The kitchen, which measures 20 by 15 feet, features two islands with granite countertops, custom cabinetry and a ceramic tile floor. One of the islands overlooks the back patio through large corner windows and has a built-in pantry.

The General Electric appliances include a dishwasher, electric stovetop, microwave, built-in oven and a brand-new refrigerator. The stovetop could be easily converted to gas.

Off the kitchen and up three steps is a full bath, convenient for both the main floor and the guest room that is above the integral three-car garage. Kitchen stairs also offer access to both the second floor and basement game room.

"The builder did such a great job designing the house. He put a door from the garage to the basement so if they were having anything delivered they wouldn't have to come through the house," said Ms. Vescio. "It's so nice -- just drive into the garage and walk up three steps with your groceries."

The 30- by 28-foot basement game room has everything needed for family entertainment plus a wood-burning fireplace.

There are custom built-in bookcases, an L-shaped wet bar with a stainless-steel sink and glass and mirror shelving behind the bar.

Walk through the custom-made leather-covered door to find a wine cellar with rack space for 400 bottles.

"I was told that originally in the game room/bar area they had pink elephants on the wall," said Ms. Swan. "Several locals told my mother of the fantastic parties that they hosted. Our family also had many parties there. I cherish those happy memories and only hope that the tradition of fun continues with the new owners."

Also on the basement level is a powder room, fully equipped laundry room complete and another room with a refrigerator and cabinets that could easily be converted to a kitchen.

On the second floor are five bedrooms running off a long curved hallway. At the end is a pair of French doors that open to a balcony overlooking the front lawn. The bedrooms range in size from the 15- by 15-foot master to 12 by 11 feet. The master bath features Carrera marble and etched glass and two pairs of bedrooms share "Jack and Jill" bathrooms.

Doors from the living room, den and kitchen lead to a 50- by 20-foot patio.

With its awning and privacy hedge, the patio becomes an outdoor room with cable television hookups.

The roof is made of slate. One of the nicest extras added by the current owner were the special windows.

"The windows have a UVA coating to protect your furnishings so they won't fade," said Ms. Vescio.

One unique feature is the house's steel frame and concrete floors. Most are covered with wall- to-wall carpeting but that would be easy to change to hardwood with today's floating floors. The house is on a corner lot with many mature trees and easy access to public transit.

The county assessed value is $676,600 (www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/Default.aspx).

Over the past three years, two other properties have sold on the Glen Osborne section of Beaver Road for $490,000 in April 2012 and $705,000 in June 2012 (www.realstats.net).
