Maria Crescimanno said that when she and her husband, Pete, decided to purchase the stunning Victorian home in at 9 North Ave. in East Washington, they did it for one reason: "It fit our large family."
Their children were grown at that time, but they wanted a house that could handle all 23 people, including 12 grandchildren, for the holidays.
"They all can be accommodated under one roof. It was our own private bed and breakfast for the week between Christmas and New Year's," she said.
The house (MLS No. 893997), which has five bedrooms, three full baths and two powder rooms, is now on the market for $247,000 with Melissa Steffey of Northwood Realty (412-885-8530, ext. 7029 or www.northwood.com).
The stucco-covered house is in the East Washington Historic District across the street from Washington & Jefferson College. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
"The previous owners (who undertook the major restoration of the home) took the old plaque that dated the house at 1860. When we went for a new one, it was issued for 1880. There was a fire at the courthouse that destroyed a lot of the records." Ms. Crescimanno said.
The home has beautiful period detail at the porch entryway with the pineapple, the symbol of hospitality, in the center. A pair of double panel doors set the stage for what lies within.
Inside, formal window treatments take advantage of the nearly floor-to-ceiling windows (there are 43 in the home, some new, some original). Period wallpaper accents the architecture. All of the original fireplace mantels are intact, but the fireplaces are only decorative. All of the ceilings are at least 9 feet and the woodwork includes picture rails, beefy crown molding and tall baseboards.
The 15- by 7-foot entry features a walnut mantel with original tile surround, carved columns and a small mirror. The staircase offers a small built-in bench with a carved arm and space for storage. Deep green carpet runs throughout the first floor.
The 16- by 14-foot family room and 17- by 14-foot living room are both painted a light mint green with crisp white trim. The custom window treatments stay with the home.
The kitchen is a combination of two connecting rooms, one for cooking and the other for eating. The 17- by 7-foot cooking space is a galley with solid-surface counters, an electric cooktop/stove and a dishwasher. Oak cabinetry runs into the adjoining breakfast room, which has period carpeting and wallpaper in a ribbon pattern.
On the second floor, the 18- by 14-foot master bedroom is nestled in the turret. A fireplace and original mirror add interest to the curvy room. The other two bedrooms on this floor measure 17 by 14 feet and 16 by 15 feet. A smartly outfitted laundry room is 13 by 6 feet and features hardwood floors, lots of cabinetry and a stainless-steel sink.
The current owners added a heating unit to the third floor to make full use of the two bedrooms (15 by 11 feet and 27 by 18 feet), a full bathroom and office space. To access the small covered porch in the turret, the owners crawled out the large windows. There is an access door in the ceiling to a full-sized attic.
Other features inside include a full basement with access to a two car tandem garage, "the only one on the block." Outdoor space includes a private side porch on the main level and a concrete side patio on the lower level. The back yard has mature landscaping including a line of Lombardy evergreens for shade and privacy.
The Crescimannos have moved to be closer to work. Some of their five children are preparing to find other accommodations at Christmastime.
"A couple of our kids are going to have to go to a motel this year," Ms. Crescimannos said. "It's going to be interesting."
