Beekeeping buzz

Christy Hemenway and Gold Star Honeybees will offer a Top Bar Beekeeping 101 Weekend Intensive Class from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 16-17. The classes are hosted by Burgh Bees, part of Penn State Extension of Allegheny County and will be held on the third floor of the building at 400 N. Lexington St., Point Breeze (15208).

Topics will include bee biology and diseases, hive management, comb handling, mite monitoring, wax rendering, honey harvesting and winterizing. Cost is $150 if you register by March 1, $175 after. Lunch is included both days. Information: http://burghbees.com/ or christy@goldstarhoneybees.com.

Seed swap in Oakland

A seed swap will be held at 10 a.m. March 2 at the main Carnegie Library branch, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland (15213).

Bring leftover seeds from last year (if you have them) and containers for taking home seeds you have received. The event is sponsored by Grow Pittsburgh and Phipps Conservatory.
