"Come home for the holidays" is the theme of the Winter Flower Show at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens that opened Friday and runs through Jan. 6.
Colorful poinsettias, amaryllis, paperwhites and other indoor favorites accompany a Victorian-style hearth in the Palm Court, elaborate wreaths, a cheerful woodland where bears and cardinals trim a tree, and a traditional fir decorated with thousands of LED lights. The Garden Railroad features an 1893 World's Fair theme.
On evenings from 5 to 10 p.m., a new outdoor Winter Light garden exhibit shines with scores of whimsical LED light forms at the Oakland glasshouse. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, $9 for children ages 2-18, and free for members and kids under 2. Visits from Santa and other special events are planned.
At Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, Shadyside, the annual Holiday Tea will be held Friday and Saturday with two seatings each day at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants can enjoy various teas, scones, finger sandwiches, trifles and tarts. Pre-registration is required, and costs are $24 for Phipps members and $27 for nonmembers. Call 412-651-5281 for reservations.
Admission to the garden center is free for the annual Gifts and Greens Market from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Saturday.
