Orchid Society to hold annual show; pruning lecture; Old Economy program

The Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania will host its annual free show, themed "An Orchid Obsession," next weekend at the Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Ave., Shadyside.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Sunday. In addition to exhibits and floral arrangements containing thousands of orchids, there will be free educational seminars, plant raffles, and plants and growing supplies for sale. Society members wearing "Ask Me About Orchids" buttons will be on hand to answer cultural questions.

Pruning, peonies, pollinators lecture

Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County will hold a Backyard Gardening Lecture Series from 9 a.m. to noon next Saturday at Penn Hills Lawn & Garden Center, 200 Jefferson Road (15235). Topics to be discussed are: "Pruning: The Kindest Cut," "The Peony and the Joys of the June Perennial Garden" and "Pollinators and Beneficial Insects." Refreshments will be served. Cost is $15 per person and walk-ins will be accepted on the day of the event. To make reservations, send checks payable to Penn State Cooperative Extension to 400 N. Lexington St., Pittsburgh 15208. Old Economy program

A free program on historic preservation and Old Economy Village will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Old Economy Village visitor center, 270 16th St., Ambridge (15003).

Bob Clendennen, Harmony Society historian, will speak on Harmonist architecture. Bill Callahan, Western Pennsylvania community preservation coordinator for the state Bureau of Historic Preservation, will discuss community asset planning and management, focusing on the Ambridge Historic District. "Faces & Places," an exhibition of old photographs of the historic district, is on display at the visitor center through December.
