Pittsburgh Distilling Co., the Strip District distillery that began selling Wigle-brand rye and wheat whiskey earlier this year, is releasing a traditional genever-style gin, being called Ginever, next week.
Genever -- it also goes by jenever, genievre, "Dutch gin" and other monikers -- is the predecessor to modern gin and is made with distilled grains, as is whiskey, rather than with a vodka or neutral spirit base.
While popular in Holland and other parts of Northern Europe, such gins are more difficult to find in the U.S. Wigle says its recipe was "inspired by pre-Prohibition gins."
The distillery's first batch of Ginever, about 300 bottles, goes on sale Friday, Oct. 19, the same day as Wigle's product-release party, planned for 6 to 9 p.m. The free party, at 2401 Smallman St., will feature $5 gin drinks, food from the BRGR food truck and music by Pittsburgh band White Like Lightning.
