I loved your story, Rebecca Sodergren, about your daughter and her "tea for two" [the Food Column, Food & Flavor, Jan. 10]. My 3-year-old granddaughter has walked with a special walker for the past nine months. She has Kabuki syndrome and is fed through a feeding tube. This makes her muscles weak, so the walker helps with strengthening her muscles and also helps with balance. Two weeks before Christmas she let go of the walker and took five steps to her mother. We all cried. She has a long way to go, but I'm sure that someday she will invite her mom (and grandma) to a tea party in the living room. God bless these wonderful children!

Hitting the sauce

Over the past few years, now that our daughters are older, we have started a new holiday tradition in our family. We drive down from Ellwood City to visit the Strip District to stock up on special treats and supplies to make homemade pasta for our holiday meals. I am always on the lookout for a new pasta sauce recipe and was most curious to try Rosemarie Perla's, especially with the touching story behind the sauce ["Philomena's Italian Christmas Eve," Food & Flavor, Dec. 20].

When I explained the recipe, my family rolled their eyes and gave me funny looks over the combination of pine nuts, anchovies and raisins. Having experienced this reaction many times, I am now immune to it and continued on cooking up the sauce. This recipe is truly amazing with its unique blend of flavors, and was so delicious with our homemade fettuccine. Wow!

P.S. Having visited Italy this summer made our holiday celebration even more special, as it was filled with memories of our trip and the wonderful food we all enjoyed. Thank you for sharing this story and the extra-special recipe! I've shared it with several other friends already.
