Food Feedback: Dad's trick for enjoying tomatoes year-round
When I was a kid, growing up in the Mon Valley, my Dad would pick the last of his tomatoes and wrap each one in newspaper, and then put them in an old bushel basket (the kind that apples used to come in) and put them in the root cellar in our basement. Somehow, the green tomatoes would ripen slowly over the winter. We often had them in salads at Thanksgiving and sometimes at Christmas. One year, when he had a bumper crop, we had the last of them at Easter.
Enjoyed reading your article. Good luck with your garden next year.
