Downtown's second Night Market set for Sept. 28

People are invited to Downtown's second night market on Friday, Sept. 28.
Project Pop Up: Night Market #2 will run from 7 p.m. to midnight, during which time a parking lot at 917-919 Liberty Ave. will become a bustling little outdoor market of food and craft vendors.
The first one was held in July, inspired by night markets in Asia that are popping up and popular in cities across North America, from Philadelphia to Los Angeles (the subject of an Aug. 30 story in this space).
Pittsburgh's first one, held in conjunction with the Cultural Trust's Gallery Crawl, attracted 600 patrons. This one, also overlapping with the fall gallery crawl (5:30 to 9 p.m.), should attract even more, says Bethany Tucke, who works for Project Pop Up: Downtown (projectpopuppittsburgh.com). It's a program to liven up the city -- using vacant and underused storefronts and public spaces -- by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, working with the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the city planning department and Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.
Ms. Tucke says the market will offer a mix of up to 30 vendors of food and handmade wares. New food vendors include Pittsburgh Pie Guy ("two guys, actually, and this will be their first event," she says), Downtown's Bluebird Kitchen (serving desserts), East Liberty's BRGR, the new Bloomfield sushi place Fukuda, Highland Park's Smiling Banana Leaf, Pretzel Crazy and East Liberty's Zeke's Coffee. Downtown's Meat & Potatoes again will be serving food, too, including fare from the forthcoming Pork & Beans restaurant, as will Conflict Kitchen, the Strip District's Reyna's Tacos and the Burgh Bites Cart of Shadyside.
Other vendors include Devorah Naturals (skin care), Tugboat Printshop, Sam Foreman (glass) and Jones Robo-Works. Creative jewelry will be offered by Erra Creation, Beads of Light, Creative Customology, Katie Hanson and SMD. There'll be music by DJ Soy Sos and more.
"We really have a good mix of people," says Ms. Tucke. "We're going to have fun." And the event could continue to grow and evolve as, say, Night Market Philadelphia has.
Saying "We're not done yet," The Food Trust announced the date and place for its next Night Market Philadelphia, the last one of this season. The event returns to Philadelphia's Chinatown -- at 10th and Race streets -- for "food, drinks, music, arts, fun" from 7 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4 (nightmarketphilly.org).
