The Andy Warhol Museum has launched a new app designed to give museum visitors a behind-the-scenes tour of the collection, along with deeper insights into many of Warhol's works.

The Warhol Art app is a multimedia exploration of Warhol's art and life, combining archival materials, letters, images, film, video and audio clips. It sheds light on more than 50 works that span the artist's career, including "Silver Clouds," "Sleep," "Mao," "The Last Supper" and "Self-Portrait."

It is designed to enhance the experience for Warhol Museum visitors, for people visiting traveling Warhol exhibitions and also for people who want to explore the collection with a virtual connection. Users will find the information helpful before, after and during museum visits.

For example, a museum visitor can look at a painting and simultaneously watch a video of Warhol creating it, hear what museum curators have to say about the piece and read more background about it.

The Warhol Museum worked with New York-based Toura, a company that creates and launches mobile applications, to create the app.

This is the second app the museum has launched in recent months. There's also the Warhol DIY app, which turns the user's photos into Warhol-style silkscreen images and explains how Warhol used the silkscreen process.

The Warhol Art app works on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android mobile devices. It is available in the iTunes App Store and the Android Marketplace; price: $2.99/smartphone, $3.99/tablet. For more information or to purchase the app: www.warhol.org/connect/mobile.
