It's always a delight to find an event app that's everything as promised. In this case, the free, official Westminster Kennel Club app provides a best-in-show experience.

The venerable two-day dog show begins Monday in New York City. Thanks to the "Westminster 101" option, we know that the show is America's second-longest continuously held sporting event (after the Kentucky Derby) and in the 127 years since the first was staged, this country has had 24 men elected president and 12 states join the union.

We also know that some dog breed names are tongue twisters ("Xoloitzcuintli," anyone?) and that a very large dog resembling a loping, white floor mop is the Komondor.

Once the event begins, users can access maps of Madison Square Garden and the Piers, where daytime breed judging will be staged. There are schedules galore, photos of the various breeds, plus videos from the ring and a "roaming" cam.
