Two local utilities lower gas rates

Two out of the three local natural gas companies announced lower rates for the next quarter, while another registered a slight increase in prices, according to filings with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
Columbia Gas customers saw the greatest drop in prices. They will pay $5.52 per thousand cubic feet (mcf), down from the $11.60 per mcf seen this same quarter one year ago.
The average Columbia Gas customer will pay $75.64 a month, down almost $20 per month from last year's average bill.
Equitable Gas also decreased its quarterly rate, down 84 cents to hit $6.51 per mcf.
The average Equitable customer can expect a monthly bill of $91.12, down from the $99.29 of the fourth quarter last year.
Peoples Natural Gas registered the only increase in rates, but it's a small one. Peoples customers will pay $5.52 per mcf, or 3 cents more than last year's rate.
The average Peoples customer will pay $11 more per month this year, with average bills costing $82.
The new rates went into effect on Oct. 1 and will last until Dec. 31. Gas companies must file adjustments with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission every quarter.
