The Reed Smith law firm is boosting its presence in Greece as it anticipates increased work coming from the economic turmoil occurring in the European country.

The firm announced an alliance today with Papapolitis & Papapolitis (P&P), an Athens-based firm that specializes in banking and finance litigation.

The two firms will work together on the projects and transactions expected in Greece as the country works its way out of a crumbling economic situation that's brought sweeping reforms to the country's business and government structures. Greece is in the throes of a five-year recession, and its unemployment rate recently exceeded 24 percent, according to the Athens-based Hellenic Statistical Authority.

Reed Smith, which has a Downtown office in Pittsburgh, already has an office in Piraeus, Greece, that specializes in litigation involving shipping, life sciences, commercial disputs and corporate matters.

"With this new alliance, we have an even stronger platform in the Greek legal market and an ability to deal with even larger and more complex projects serving our clients' growing needs," said John Reece, Reed Smith's office managing partner in Greece, in a statement.
