Some customers of PNC Bank were having trouble logging into their online and mobile banking accounts this afternoon following a threatened digital attack on a handful of big U.S. banks, according to a posting on the Pittsburgh-based bank's Facebook page.

"We know access to your accounts is important and we continue to address the issue," PNC said in the post, adding that customers' financial data was secure.

A group called the al-Qassam Cyber Fighters said in an Internet posting that it planned a round of so-called denial of service attacks this week on Pittsburgh-based PNC and four other big banks to protest a video insulting to the Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

The group claimed responsibility for a wave of digital attacks on a number of big banks in the fall, which disrupted PNC's online banking operations for a couple of days in September.

Denial of service attacks work by flooding websites with communications requests.

PNC customers having trouble accessing their accounts today were being urged to keep trying and to check the bank's Facebook page for updates.
