Another new sports stadium will be built on the city's riverfront.

Members of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team are scheduled to unveil plans today for the construction of a stadium at Station Square.

The formal announcement comes several months after the team met with city planning department officials to discuss the possible development at Station Square, as first reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Team officials hope to have their new home, which would overlook the Monongahela River on the south shore, finished sometime this summer. They are billing the complex as a "multi-sport stadium."

In a recent interview, Craig Cozza, a member of the Riverhounds' ownership group, said the team saw the stadium as potentially a site for local rugby and lacrosse matches and perhaps Pittsburgh Passion women's football games.

"Obviously, we're evaluating opportunities for a whole host of activities there," Riverhounds CEO Jason Kutney said Monday.

He declined to offer further details on the project, pending a press conference today.

The new stadium is expected to replace the Trib Total Media Amphitheatre at Station Square. The concert venue returned to the property two years ago but is facing stiff competition from Stage AE on the North Shore.

Mr. Cozza said the Riverhounds also hoped to use the stadium as a training facility for soccer in the region. He said at the time that the team envisioned a stadium with seating for about 5,000 people or less. Officials also were looking to tie the facility in with the riverfront trails that run through the area.

The total cost of the project was not available Monday.

For the last three years, the Riverhounds have played their home games at Chartiers Valley High School.
