Pittsburgh's largest law firm, K&L Gates, said it will merge with Australian firm Middletons effective Jan. 1.

The combination gives K&L 2,000-plus lawyers in 46 offices worldwide.

In a joint statement tonight, the firms said partners of each voted unanimously for the merger. The combined firm will carry the K&L Gates name.

Middletons has 300 lawyers in four offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

The merger is yet another move by K&L to aggressively penetrate the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region where it now has 400 lawyers in 11 offices.
