Highmark Inc. will be breaking ground on the first of its new "medical malls" tomorrow in Pine, according to the health insurer.

At the ground-breaking, scheduled for 10 a.m., Highmark chief executive officer William Winkenwerder Jr. and other company and medical officials will discuss the insurer's plans for the site.

Highmark, a non-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer, has spent the last year buying properties and acquiring controlling stakes in hospital systems in order to build its own provider network.

A major component of that build-out is the construction of several new medical malls, which will provide several outpatient surgery and medical services.

The Pine mall will be built near the intersection of Route 19 and Wallace Road Extension.
