Government continues to shed jobs as national unemployment rate remains at 7.8 percent

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning that the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.8 percent in December from the November rate, which had originally been reported as 7.7 percent but was revised upward.
A survey of employers also found 155,000 new jobs in December.
Manufacturers added 25,000 new workers during the month with primary metal production up by just 200 jobs across the country.
The manufacture of motor vehicles and parts, which also includes trailers, was up by 4,800 jobs.
Health care industries added 44,500 jobs, 23,000 of those were out of hospitals in physicians offices (6,800 jobs), outpatient care centers including physical therapy clinics (2,900 jobs) and home health services (5,400 jobs).
Governments continued to cut back, shedding 13,000 jobs nationally with the biggest source of job losses in public schools, which cut 11,500 jobs in December.
