Giant Eagle confirms layoffs

Giant Eagle is trimming 75 positions, mostly at the O'Hara grocer's corporate offices, in a move that a company spokesman described as part of a continuing effort to cut costs and operate efficiently.
Employees were notified this week, said Rob Borella, senior director of corporate communications, in response to a query about the layoffs.
"It's certainly something that we treat seriously," he said.
Giant Eagle employs 36,000 people in four states and about 11,000 in Western Pennsylvania, a mix of part-time and full-time workers.
Mr. Borella said the cuts are being made across the corporate organization at multiple levels. He said the positions being trimmed were identified through reviews done in the routine course of business.
Giant Eagle, a private company that reports approximately $9.9 billion in annual sales, has 229 supermarkets and 187 fuel and convenience stores in western Pennsylvania, north central Ohio, northern West Virginia and Maryland.
A new GetGo convenience store opened this morning on McKnight Road in Ross.
