The journalists who vote for North American Car of the Year awards this morning gave the prize to the Cadillac ATS, giving General Motors its fifth win in the category and a morale boost as the Detroit automaker gets back on track.

"Today's a proud day for General Motors. It's a proud day for Cadillac," said the company representative who hurried up to collect the prize announced this morning at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Detroit.

The prize for North American Truck/Utility of the Year went to the Ram 1500, made by Chrysler.

The other finalists in the car category were the Ford Fusion and the Honda Accord.

Truck/Utility finalists were the Ford C-Max and the Mazda CX-5. The awards have been given for 20 years.

Detroit's auto show opens to the public later this week but a media preview began this morning, and many new vehicle introductions are underway. The event draws thousands of media representatives every year, in part because major manufacturers use the event to set the tone for the next year.
