Grant to aid area minority business startups

Christian Evangelistic Economic Development of Pittsburgh received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration to provide technical assistance to minority and immigrant business startups in the 10-county Pittsburgh region. A matching $300,000 grant was provided by the Heinz Endowments.

Alcoa boosts employment at Cranberry plant

Alcoa is hiring 280 workers for its Traco plant in Cranberry, boosting employment at the 1 million-square-foot facility by more than 40 percent. Spokesman Kevin Lowery said 150 full-time and 130 seasonal workers will be hired, mostly for production jobs. He cited increased demand for windows made at the plant, which currently employs about 650. Alcoa acquired Traco in August.

Ampco-Pittsburgh's first quarter profits fall

Ampco-Pittsburgh said first quarter earnings fell despite higher sales, citing higher costs, pricing pressures from customers and foreign exchange losses. Net income totalled $7.7 million, or 74 cents per diluted share, on sales of $89.1 million vs. earnings of $8.2 million, or 80 cents per diluted share, and sales of $82.3 million in the year-ago quarter.

Highmark opening two new stores in state

Pittsburgh health insurer Highmark Inc. announced that it will open two new retail stores in Pennsylvania, one in Lancaster and one in Easton. When they open, the company will have eight Highmark Direct stores, retail outlets where individuals, couples and seniors can shop for health insurance products, including medical and dental policies. The first such store opened in Pittsburgh's North Hills, along McKnight Road, two years ago.
