Bayer USA names foundation leader

Sarah Toulouse has been named donations officer for Bayer USA and will head the Bayer USA Foundation, the German-based company said Wednesday.
The foundation, Bayer's primary philanthropy source in the U.S., will remain based at the company's complex in Robinson, said spokeswoman Katie Kirkpatrick.
Though Ms. Toulouse will work out of Bayer's campus off the Parkway West, she will report to Philip Blake, senior Bayer representative in the U.S. and the company's top executive in North America. Mr. Blake is based in Whippany, N.J., where he runs the company's U.S. health care division as well as overseeing all of Bayer's North American operations.
Robinson is the base for Bayer MaterialScience's NAFTA region, although some U.S. headquarters personnel remain there, as well.
Ms. Toulouse, 36, succeeds Rebecca Lucore, who was executive director of the foundation until June when she became chief of staff for the Bayer MaterialScience NAFTA region. The position of donations officer is a newly created role.
In 2011, the foundation handed out grants totaling $9.3 million. The total for 2012 is not yet available, Ms. Kirkpatrick said.
The foundation's grants are focused on the environment, sustainability, education, workforce development, arts, culture, health and human services. It targets programs in communities where Bayer has facilities but has funded a range of entities, such as the National Park Foundation and relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Ms. Toulouse previously worked for Bayer from 1997 to 2007 in various jobs in communications. In 2007, she left to become senior manager of corporate communications at South Side-based retailer American Eagle Outfitters. From 2008 to 2011, she was manager of communications and marketing for Asset Inc., a nonprofit launched by Bayer to assist schools with science education.
She returned to Bayer last year as a program officer for the Bayer USA Foundation and has served as its acting executive director since September.
