More than 400 service workers at The Washington Hospital tonight voted by a majority to strike if they cannot reach what they called a fair contract agreement.
Union representatives say the hospital's proposals would put health benefits out of reach for many workers, cut salaries of some workers by more than $4 an hour and reduce protections for workers on medical leave.
The negotiating committee will continue meeting with the hospital to settle a fair contract, according to a union press release.
Workers in dietary, housekeeping and other departments are represented by SEIU Healthcare PA. The current contract expires Jan. 31. Negotiations have been ongoing since early January.
A community rally of support will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, at the Alpine club in Washington.
