TV Review: 'Kath & Kim' is a dumb half-hour

NBC's comedy drought continues. New entry "Kath & Kim" (8:30 tonight, WPXI) offers a few laughs but it's mostly a dumb dud.
Why dumb? Because its characters are not at all bright and Kim (Selma Blair), in particular, is vicious, mean and unlikable. (Imagine the low likeability of the "Arrested Development" characters without any of the wit.)
"I didn't sign up for cooking dinner or being interested in how anyone's day went," says the recently married Kim, who ditches patsy husband Greg (Mikey Day) shortly after they've tied the knot.
Kim is the spoiled princess daughter of Kath (Molly Shannon), a long-suffering single mom who lives in suburbia and doesn't appear to work. How she can afford her sizeable home is not explained.
- Starring: Selma Blair, Molly Shannon
- When: 8:30 tonight, NBC-TV
Kath is dating a new man, Phil (John Michael Higgins), who runs a sandwich shop in the mall food court. Kim, a self-described "trophy wife," sneers at Phil and calls her mother a loser.
Best line in the pilot: "We cannot go to Applebees every night," says Greg. "We're not millionaires."
"Kath & Kim" is based on an Australian hit series of the same name but this Americanized version is an unpleasant way to pass a half-hour.
