WQED Multimedia announces new initiative with Black Male Engagement; grant from Heinz Endowments

WQED Multimedia today announced an expansion of efforts aimed at casting black men and boys in a more positive light.
A $390,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments will support those efforts.
WQED today said it would produce four more documentaries in its "African Men and Boys: Portrayal and Perception" initiative. The 30-minute documentaries, to feature the contributions of black media representatives and doctors, among others, will air throughout the year.
Also, WQED wants men and boys to record and upload their own stories about how they're making a difference in their communities. The initiative will be undertaken with Black Male Engagement, or BMe, which has launched similar programs in Detroit and Philadelphia.
"We're hoping to amass hundreds of these stories," Darryl Ford Williams, WQED vice president of content, said.

Ms. Ford Williams said WQED may hold watch parties to promote the messages, which will run a couple of minutes each.
