WQED leads Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominees

Coverage of the year's big stories -- including the Jerry Sandusky scandal and a shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC -- are well-represented in the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations.
The nominations, announced Tuesday, were culled from 659 entries in 76 categories in the television industry. Winners, representing a region comprising Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, will be announced Sept. 22 in Philadelphia.
Locally, WQED Multimedia led with 22 nominations, including documentary filmmaker Rick Sebak ("Good Donuts"); four segments recognized in historic/cultural program or special; and three in the category of health/environmental science program or special.
On the news side, KDKA earned 14 nominations, followed by WPXI with 12 and WTAE with nine. ROOT Sports TV of Pittsburgh garnered two nominations.
Work on the March 8 hospital shooting in Oakland earned recognition for three local stations: WTAE and WPXI in the spot news category, KDKA and WPXI in team coverage.
Also among the nominees was WPXI's Courtney Brennan, whose standup in the category of general assignment report within 24 hours became a viral video. Positioned in the street in front of the Sandusky home last winter, her eyes grew wide and she hustled out of the way when she noticed Dottie Sandusky driving a car toward her. Mrs. Sandusky zoomed past her, into the driveway.
The Mid-Atlantic chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will award NBC News president Steve Capus its Board of Governors Award at the ceremony in Philadelphia.
