TV Notes: Mac Miller's reality show gives MTV2 a ratings boost

Mac Miller is no match for Honey Boo Boo, but he did deliver for MTV2 on Tuesday night.

The Pittsburgh rapper's new reality show, "Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family," helped lift the cable network to its highest rated total day since July 2011 among males 12-34, with a .33 rating.

Paired with "Guy Code" in the 11 p.m. to midnight slot, it was also the first time MTV2 expanded to an hour of original programming on Tuesday night. Miller's show was the No. 2 original cable series among males 12-34 in its time slot.

Miller told MTV this week, "[At first], I was skeptical about doing a TV show because I don't wanna be 'the guy from the TV show' -- I'm an artist and I wanna make music. But we did YouTube videos that were behind-the-scenes, and this is kinda taking that a little further. Instead of on YouTube, it's on TV now."

He also was concerned about his Most Dope crew making good TV. "I wasn't excited until [recently], because the whole time I'm thinking, 'Man, this show's gonna [stink]. It's me -- what do people wanna look at me for? This isn't exciting, I'm not Kanye West, I'm Mac Miller; it's just me and the homeys.' And then I saw some clips from it, and it was kinda tight."

He promises a "legendary" guest appearance by Schoolboy Q in episode three or four.

Pop culture worlds collide Tuesday when Edgar Snyder and Curt Wootton, known as YouTube sensation "Pittsburgh Dad," team up to dispense free legal advice on "No Fee TV" television.

Mr. Snyder, head of Edgar Snyder & Associates, has been doing television advertising for 30 years, always ending with "We get money for you!"

He and Mr. Wootton will accept call-in questions for legal advice from 7:30 to 8 p.m. Viewers also can submit questions through Twitter, using the hashtag #NoFeeTV on Twitter and Google +. They also can post on the firm's Facebook page. The episode will air live on the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel (PCNC) and re-air at 12:30 p.m. March 9

Viewers outside the Pittsburgh region can watch via the law firm's YouTube channel.

Mr. Wootton has referenced Edgar Snyder & Associates in previous episodes and said he looks forward to introducing "Dad" to Edgar on the upcoming show. "There's a lot of fun and humor in introducing Dad to a longtime Pittsburgh personality like Edgar."

Drummer-producer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of the Roots is adding "author" to his resume, the Associated Press reports.

Mr. Thompson announced Wednesday that "Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove" will be released June 18 by Grand Central Publishing.

The book includes the rap musician's run-ins with "celebrities, idols and fellow artists," including Stevie Wonder, KISS and Jay-Z. It also tackles "some of the lates, the greats, the fakes and the true originals of the music world."

The Roots is the house band for NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." They have released 12 albums and are a favorite of music critics.

Mr. Thompson, 42, has been a producer for Jay-Z, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and John Legend. He has four Grammy Awards.
