The summer TV season kicks off in earnest this week, and this year the broadcast networks seem less inclined to put out a "Gone Fishin' " sign for the next three months.
In addition to the usual reality TV filler, broadcasters are also investing in new scripted series for summer. At press time, CBS had not announced much in the way of originals -- it seems likely that "Flashpoint" will return sometime this summer -- but ABC, Fox and NBC all have original scripted programming planned.
"True Beauty" returns to ABC Monday at 10 p.m., kicking off a week of returning series: "Cake Boss" (9 p.m. Monday, TLC), "Hell's Kitchen" (8 p.m. Tuesday, Fox), "America's Got Talent" (8 p.m. Tuesday, NBC), "The Little Couple" (10 p.m. Tuesday, TLC), "Royal Pains" (9 p.m. Thursday, USA) and "Burn Notice" (10 p.m. Thursday, USA) begin new seasons.
New series debuting this week include:
"Jersey Couture" (10 p.m. Tuesday, Oxygen): Glomming onto the popularity of "Jersey Shore," this docu-series follows a New Jersey family and their dress shop business.
"Losing It With Jillian" (10 p.m. Tuesday, NBC): "Biggest Loser" fixture Jillian Michaels helps American families get healthier.
"Are We There Yet?" (9 p.m. Wednesday, TBS): Based on the movie, this comedy stars Terry Crews ("Everybody Hates Chris") as patriarch of a newly blended family.
The rest of June is just as packed with premieres of returning shows: "Drop Dead Diva" (9 p.m. June 6, Lifetime), "Ice Road Truckers" (9 p.m. June 6, History), "Kate Plus 8" (9 p.m. June 6, TLC), "Lie to Me" (8 p.m. June 7, Fox), "Last Comic Standing" (8 p.m. June 7, NBC), "Secret Life of the American Teenager" (8 p.m. June 7, ABC Family), "Penn & Teller: Bull#@• &" (10 p.m. June 10, Showtime), "Whitest Kids U'Know" (10 p.m. June 11, IFC), "Beautiful People" (10 p.m. June 12, Logo), "True Blood" (9 p.m. June 13, HBO), "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (9 p.m. June 15, Bravo), "Top Chef: Washington, D.C."
