Nielsen ratings for television news are cyclical, so it was no surprise that the number of households watching in early morning for weather, traffic and school closings helped boost viewership among local stations.
Pittsburgh's big three are embroiled in one of the country's closest races, where the status quo held for the sweeps book running Jan. 31-Feb. 27. In general, WTAE (ABC affiliate) won the morning broadcasts, KDKA (CBS) took much of noon until 11 p.m. WPXI (NBC) was almost uniformly second throughout the day and night.
For the first time since 1998, when it had the Winter Olympics from Nagano, Japan, CBS finished first in network primetime demo 18-49. The Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards and hit-scripted shows such as "The Big Bang Theory" and "NCIS" helped bolster the ratings on weekdays.
WPGH, which airs WPXI's "Channel 11 News on Fox 53" made big jumps at 10 o'clock.
The next sweeps book begins April 25.
